Speaking Toddler, as any parent knows, can be tricky.
On our 7 hour drive down to meet Angela's newest daughter, yet to arrive, we had a small variety of things to keep Morgan occupied. Some books, some headphones and a DVD player borrowed from friends in case we just needed her to be quiet for awhile.
After our lunch stop the decision was made to set up the DVD and put in a movie for Morgan, Tinkerbell. She loved it and was quiet for almost the entire movie, headphones on so we didn't have to listen to it or her cry about not being able to hear it. About 40 minutes in she asked it to be turned off and Kim contorted around to get it undone, paused and stowed. No sooner than Kim got it figured out, Morgan wanted it back.
As she watched she would make comments like, "Oh no!" or giggle, clearly enjoying the movie.
Then she started asking Kim to "fix me, I can't talk."
OK, some strange game where she can't talk because Eliza was sleeping next to her?
"Maybe Papa can fix you when we get there, OK?" We exchanged confused looks as she held the DVD in her lap and the headphones around her neck.
That should have been the giveaway.
As the movie ended and Morgan handed it back to Kim, she unplugged the headphones and we could finally hear the movie...
...in French.
Somehow in the transfer the language settings were changed. The only way Morgan could think to tell us the people in the movie weren't talking right was to tell us to fix her talking.
Certainly a memory I'll have for a long time.

Tea Parties?
The internet and TV are buzzing about these "Tea Parties" where disgruntled people can gather and voice their disagreement with the way things are shaping up.
It's right there in the Constitution that persons may "Peacibly assemble to petition their government for a redress of grievances." Seems simple enough, but so many folks are misinterpreting these gatherings to be akin to the Boston Tea Party Terrorist Attack. Quick - Name a founding father who was part of the Boston Tea Party raid. Can't think of one?
"No taxation without representation" was the battle cry of the Tea Party folks, they were being taxed without the ability to have a say in the taxes, ie representation in Parliament. In actuality they were likely American tea traders looking to corner the market. It may have been industrial sabotage.
Current day Tea Party folks are protesting for nothing. They have representation, just not the folks they wanted, Boo hoo. For 8 long years the rest of us were told we were traitors if we even thought about questioning the office of the President of the United States, but since it's our guy, all of a sudden it is OK to openly wish for the President to fail.
You support the Office, but not the policies, right? You're protesting the move to "socialize" the government? Well then I support you 100%.
If you attend a tea party against the socialization of America you will need to alter your lifestyle just a smidge in order to be taken seriously.
1. I'll need your cellphones. The "3G" network you're using to plan your tea party is subsidized by the government. In other words, your tax dollars were used to help companies build those networks, so no phones.
2. You'll need to walk. Your car may have been assembled in America but if it is a Ford, it was made in Mexico. Your Toyota was made here, but you'll likely drive on a road maintained by the socialist, state run highway department, so no driving, especially on the interstates.
3. You will need to remain in the cordoned areas. Remember when all those folks would peacibly gather to petition President Bush? They were marshaled to "Free Speech Zones" surrounded by barbed wire and watched by armed guard. I expect no less for Tea Party revelers.
4. You will be required to show proof that your gardener is an American. You mow your own lawn, wonderful. Good for you. Next you will need to prove the girl who cleans your house is an American. The guy at the car wash, too. What about those guys you hired to do all the home improvements a few years back. Sure the guy taking the check looked like you, but what about all the guys that did the work cheap?
5. You can not call 911 during your event. The socialized fire and police departments will not be available to your "new world."
6. You can not eat anything that has American corn in it, on it, or was fed it. the government subsidizes farmers by buying corn and destroying it to keep the prices in check. Your tax dollars pay farmers to grow corn so it can be destroyed. Socialist spreading of our wealth to the farmers.
In summary no one has really thought this idea through to the end. On April 16th, when your taxes are late and the socialized school system has to lay off your kid's teacher, and the paramedics at your nearby fire station, then can't fix the potholes, don't cry about it, that's what you wanted.
"Socialized" is not a bad thing. It may be the only solution to the 8 years of destructive policies that got us in this mess.
So I welcome persons standing up for their beliefs, it is our right as Americans and, in fact, our duty to speak up. But where were you in March of 2003 when we needed you?

Catching up
Morgan just loves her "park" in the back yard. What I never planned for was the constant "Daddy push me!" No matter how many times I try to show her how to do it on her own, I always have to strike a deal. "You work, then push. work-push, work-push, Daddy."
The work she refers to is Kim's growing garden in the back yard. Strategically located away from the swingset we now have tomatoes, berries and the squash are awaiting the perfect spot over in the corner. She's always wanted to do a garden and finally got me motivated enough here in the new Carriage House to make the space and get the raised beds made so she can plant. The tomatoes looked for a few days as though they were considering throwing in the towel, but after this past few days of rain already have new growth at the top.
Our trees are doing well, the pear survived the frost, and there are at least 15 peaches on the way. Needless to say we're excited to see how they do. Last year Morgan pulled them all off just as they surfaced.
I finally got the time off I needed to travel south next week to see Meadow #2 when she arrives. I had it all arranged until they changed my schedule at work. It was the equivalent of telling someone on a 9-5 schedule, "You work 12P-8AM tuesdays and 3P-11P the other days. Oh and your new weekends are Wed and Thur." Annoying to say the least. Luckily I found a fellow who was in the same spot and was willing to cover a few days. Thank you Eric.
Eliza is a crawling fool as you can see from the video and she is getting faster and faster everyday. This morning she went from visible to gone in the time it took to pour a cup of coffee. I still sometimes forget she can sit up alone, let alone crawl at 20 MPH towards the wine rack.
I think I've mentioned in these pages that we only use "No" when Morgan is asking for something. If she is doing something dangerous we shout "DANGER!." She freaks and stops dead in her tracks. It has worked to this point and beyond. The other night on the computer with the girls playing behind me I hear Morgan say, "Daddy! Eliza danger!" And I turned to see Eliza has moved to the other side of the room and is examining where the lamp plugs in. It is a switched plug, but still. Morgan didn't try to stop her, just shouted and pointed. That's my girl.
We are all looking forward to a change of pace heading south for a few days, mainly to have a couple extra sets of eyes on the midgets.
We also finally broke down and joined thecult social site Facebook. It is a neat way to stay in touch with friends in real time, mostly silly, but fun and a great way to get distracted when watching the children.
We'll put up news of Meadow #2 as it happens.
That is the word from Carriage House.

What a Busy month April is
OK, OK. Before Angela and Amy start rolling their eyes at me (Angela is due next week and Amy May 1st at the latest) understand our month will be busy for us.
After Easter we're scheduled to pack up the old family truckster and head south to meet the newest Kraber. It will be nice to clean out the garage of all thecrap baby gear. And Morgan's room. And Eliza's room. And our room. Darn it if that stuff isn't all over the house.
Ang, the swing, clothes, and a lot of bottle stuff is on the way.
AJ and Amy, along with wee Dylan, are expecting baby sister Maya any time now. After some speed bumps along the way, she's got an eviction notice for May 1st. Amy opened her practice not long ago and AJ is still with AFD. They can tell you more on their blog.
In home front news, Eliza is a crawling fool. She was very close for a week and one afternoon just went or it and now is a pro. We haven't set up the gates yet so she is currently crawling away from me down the hall. Now she sees a toy near the TV cabinet and is over playing with it instead of exploring the hallway.
Her top teeth are just beneath the surface and every night she lets us know how it feels. Morgan used to just need a frozen pacifier, but Eliza pushes them away.
On a different note, has anyone noticed the increase in mass killings by firearm lately? I just finished typing a long rant about that and the skewing of the Bill of Rights, but it was far too long for this platform. So away it goes.
See you Southern folks in a few days!

Oh, the things they say

Eliza is still making sounds, speaking in her own language, but Morgan has mastered the fine art of mimicry.
Morgan likes to play on her play phone. She has conversations. Conversations like:
"Hello? Oh hi!" Which Kim says all the time.
"Hello Meadow, I'm coming to Disneyland in a couple of weeks." To Morgan "A couple of weeks" is anything past tomorrow.
This morning was great.
"Hello? Oh hi! Hang on. Daddy and Eliza you have to be quiet when I'm on the phone, go and play." Eliza and I were just sitting on the floor at the time, not making any noise. Morgan's inflection sounded very authoritative and exactly like Kim. I had to laugh out loud.
But the best sign of a child growing is the changing of a statement so that when it is repeated it makes sense. Let me explain.
The other night, while out to dinner, Kim did something that made me laugh and tell Morgan, jokingly, "Tell your Mother she has no imagination."
Without a pause Morgan turned to Kim and said, "You have no imagination" and went right back to her dinner.
We laughed and laughed.
Morgan is now back on the phone asking Grand to come and get Eliza when Christmas comes.
"OK, bye bye."

Swing Set up and functional!
It took a few more hours laboriously screwing six 2 1/2" screws into each of the floor boards, but here Morgan is enjoying the new play set. She calls it her "Park."
I plan on building a roof from left over roofing materials, so it matches the house, so yes, that part still needs to be finished.

Happy Spring!

The cold, dark winter has ended and the sun has returned to bring new growth and new life to our world. The Vernal Equinox is an ancient holiday that symbols the rebirth of the fields and is celebrated by symbols of rebirth, eggs, rabbits and chickens. The day will be equal length to the night. This holiday was be renamed, moved and adopted by a new belief system.
The Schorrs were hard at work in the gardens yesterday, making sure our new blossoms had places to grow. Last year at this time this house was vacant and no one was here to tend the garden. We had a great time.
Sprinklers were repaired and new sprinkler line installed. Large bulb flowers were relocated and errant wildflowers we enjoyed on cold mornings are being pulled to make way for the calla lillies that are coming in, and fast. I plan on taking some pictures in the next few days and will put them up as soon as I can.
Working in the overgrown garden got me thinking about our recent economic woes and it made perfect sense.
While our house was vacant, the garden grew and grew without anyone to cut it back when it was needed. There were dozens of different plants all growing faster and faster, overcrowding each other. When we moved in the garden area was completely overgrown, breaking out of the borders and trying to grow across the pathway to the side yard. There had been no one to cut back the growth at a safe rate so each plant grows to it's own full potential.
Instead most of the flowers and plants were choking each other off and the garden was a mess. Someone needs to watch over the garden and make sure it grows in a way that any plant has a chance to flower and if the conditions aren't right and the plant can't do well, we remove it and another will take it's place.
Yesterday I completely "regulated" our garden by pulling a very entrenched large bulb system of reeds which had cropped up around a leaky sprinkler. Had there been 3-4 plants, it might have been OK, but there were dozens of plants all packed into this small area. All were still reeds and competing for sun, water and nutrients against one another so much, not a single one of them flowered.
So what happened was we had no gardener tending our garden, aggressive plants took over and grew too large for the space, eventually choking off the rest of the bulbs. After I cleared it out last year and tended it early in the spring, in a few weeks we'll be treated to a wonderful, carefully minded garden.
And that's how you fix the economy. Forget economic theory, it has failed. just get out in the garden and it will all make sense.
That reminds me, would you like to buy some reed plants? I have extra.

St. Patrick's Day

Before drinking your green beer and pinching those not wearing green ask yourself one quick question:
Who was St Patrick and why do we celebrate a day for him?
St. Patrick was not Irish, but British, and was captured in Ireland sometime in his childhood. After a reported 6 years in captivity he escaped back to England intent on returning bringing the word of God to the heathens in Ireland.
St. Patrick received extensive religious training and was sent back to Ireland with a dual mission to testify to the Christians already in Ireland as well as convert the remainder of the country to Christianity.
St. Patrick is given credit for using pagan rituals to introduce Christian concepts and teach his religion to others. This may explain why most Christian rituals are Pagan rituals with different words. Lighting candles in ceremony, wearing hooded robes and burning incense all started in the church around the time of St. Patrick and are all Pagan elements of ritual.
So when you lift your glass of Guinness and endure corned beef and cabbage you are celebrating the conversion of the Irish people to Christianity from their native religion.
Imagine if we today celebrated St. Nero Day to celebrate the oppression of early Christianity in Rome. There would be riots.
Thank goodness we live in a place where we are free to practice the beliefs of our choice. Freedom of religion means ANY religion.

What do you think, gentle readers
According to recent opinion polls, most people think the nation is broken. Forget the "debate" about what, or who, broke it and how, let's move on to the solution.
What is broken where you are and how can we, as Americans, fix it?
I got the idea from this website what do you think?

Fate, luck, karma, God and a water leak
Everyone knows I had quite the OCD issue early on. It's gotten a lot better in recent years but sometimes it still kicks in and I can ignore it or just let it happen (like when the house needs to get cleaned up).
But last night I was washing my hands at the bathroom sink and the bottom cabinet door was slightly ajar. Only slightly, but I let my OCD kick in and I just HAD to get that door closed and lined up with the other one. I pushed and pushed and nothing happened. I opened the door to find a small space heater, unused in quite some time, was partially blocking the door.
So I removed it and replaced it forcefully (there's nothing important under there anyway) when I heard water sloshing. A basin was under the sink and had nearly a half gallon of water in it. The ring that holds the part of the sink that closes the drain when you pull the lever was not properly secured and had been slowly leaking, likely since we moved in almost a year ago.
I was able to repair the part easily and toss out the disgusting basin, but it got me wondering how a space heater was able to move just enough to open a door just enough to cause my OCD to kick in just enough to investigate what I never would have found on my own. And the basin just happening to be directly beneath the leak at the time?
Like the title says, God, karma, fate, who knows, but someone or something moved that heater.
Or it was Morgan.

Morgan's Party

We were hoping the weather would clear up for Morgan's party and indeed it did. It started a bit chilly, but by the time the hot dogs were ready, most folks were out back enjoying the first sunny warm day this year.
It was a pirate themed party, Morgan's choice, and our guests were met by a Jolly Roger flag out front and pirate crafts and coloring inside.
As mentioned in the invitation, we had grub and grog for young and old alike since we met new friends, Jason Katie and Faith for example, and old friends, Dickie Teri and Ori. The kids seemed to enjoy the yard while the adults hovered in the sunlight of the back yard.
It was a blast and Morgan got a lot of really neat gifts and enjoyed seeing all her friends.
Her favorite gifts so far are the little laptop game and her tea set. I've been to quite a few tea parties just in the few days since the party.
A good time was had by all, especially Linda Jeana and Jerry who were all able to make it up/down for the party and smother themselves in the girls' activities. We tried sneaking away one night but Eliza had other plans. I answered the phone at the restaurant, heard only screaming, said, "We'll be right there" and saw Kim finishing her drink in a flash.
All the party pictures are up at costco, for those who know the access code. They've also been added to the flickr slideshow at the top of this page.
Happy Birthday Morgan, Meadow and Jerry, all our March babies!

Since September?
I was going to make an announcement in these pages, but now it doesn't seem like such a big thing.
Morgan is officially potty trained. There I said it and you can mark me on that. If she's awake, she's in control.
I went through the archives here thinking we started this much later than I thought. September 16th was the day, this was the post. I just can't believe it took this long. A few weeks I figured, but the accidents just kept happening, one here, 2 the next day, a day with none, then 1, it was getting frustrating.
But today she was golden, not having to be reminded of the importance of the action, just doing it, naturally.
So there.
Oh and Eliza is talking.

Of all the houses to go to for help
Years ago, when my parents were visiting, you all may recall the girl who came screaming that her house was on fire. Of all the houses to go to for help, she got me and dad searching the house and putting the fire out while mom kept her calm and phoned it in. The house was saved and we have a great picture on the fire extinguisher we used of me and dad in front of the house.
Kim was at work that day and missed all the excitement.
Today, however, the excitement caught up with her.
Eliza and I were out shopping and returned home to see Kim on the from walk with a woman with a baby. I assumed since she had recently returned from playgroup this was a new mom visiting.
When I exited the car and she said, in her stern voice, "Justin, I need you here please," my mood changed.
Kim had heard a shout, then a ring of the doorbell and calls for help. The mother of the 3 month old was asking Kim to call 911 becasue the baby was "unresponsive."
With Morgan in the house and not knowing what to do, she said, "OK I'll call" and went inside to do so.
Back outside with mom and child Kim notes the baby is breathing and seems fine, but is wishing I would hurry up and get there already.
When I did my Paramedic thing the baby was tired and might have been sick, hard to tell without my tools of the trade.
Sirens were getting closer and it was a police officer that arrived on the scene first. Then another policeman, then the local Engine company, who took over care and gave the little one some oxygen.
Morgan was quite excited to see the fire engine pull up in front of her house.
The ambulance arrived and baby was taken to the back for a better look and our work was done. Morgan waved goodbye and told me all about how the baby was in the back of the ambulance now.
I'm just glad I got home when I did. Had I been 5 minutes later in returning I would have seen this infront of the house and thought the worst:

The girls, they are a growin'
A few nights ago Kim made Eliza bowl of cereal, then went to get something when she heard from behind her a little voice say, "Here you go sweetie." This is what she saw:
He's a silly man daddy
Kim hates when I get political on this blog, but I can't resist after watching Louisiana Governor Jindal give the Republican "response" to last night's Presidential Address.
He had a used car salesman slime as he talked about the dangers of Federal spending while accepting billions for Katrina relief (Which was needed). Now he claims he will refuse the funding to extend jobless claims to ensure those without work have basic medical coverage. On "principal." He didn't flinch when they gave away 100s of billions to investment banks without strings in the dead of night. And now we find out the money is just plain gone. Wasted and we have nothing to show for it. Not 1 job, not 1 repaired pot hole.
We watched the President's address last night and were impressed to see a man in control who can speak clear English. That aside, I always enjoy seeing one political party stand and cheer while the other remains seated, hands clasped. When the old President used to talk about military spending of 2.8 Trillion for Iraq (which is now included in the Federal budget for the first time EVER) everyone cheered and no one questioned the debt it would create.
Suddenly we have to put Americans back to work and they freak it costs too much.
I saw a statistic recently that if you spent a million dollars a day, since the beginning of the Christian Calendar (Birth of Jesus of Nazareth) everyday you would still not have the money in the stimulus bill.
But imagine if we had invested that million dollars a day to build and repair roads, fight cancer and build a reliable power network.
Our nation wouldn't be falling apart from within but would be strong, not just on paper.
And if you spent 4 million dollars per day since the beginning of the Christian Calendar and watched 2 brave soldiers die, each year, you would have the cost of the Iraq war alone.
Who is irresponsible with creating debt for our children?
Not to mention the $3.5 billion and counting profit for contractor Halliburton.
Halliburton makes more money per quarter than Exxon, the most profitable corporation in America. Halliburton is based in Dubai, UAE (United Arab Emirates) the home country of at least 3 of the identified 9/11 hijackers. They accept American Tax dollars, but moved away to avoid paying taxes on their profits.
I'll climb off my soapbox now.
This morning, while watching the Today show which featured an interview with Gov Jindal, Morgan walked by, stopped and looked at him and said, "He's a silly man daddy."
Yes he is sweetie. Yes he is.
